How to Replace Broken Glass in a Patio Door

Patio doors bring natural light into your home and provide easy access to outdoor spaces. However, a broken glass panel can compromise the integrity of your patio door and create a safety hazard. Replacing the broken glass is a relatively straightforward DIY project that can save you money compared to hiring a professional.

Materials you will need:

  • Replacement glass
  • Glazing tape
  • Silicone caulk
  • Glazier's points
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Rubber mallet

Steps:

1. Safety First

Always wear gloves and safety glasses when handling broken glass. Clean up any broken glass shards thoroughly before proceeding.

2. Remove the Old Glass

Carefully pry out the broken glass using a flathead screwdriver or putty knife. Remove the glazing tape from around the frame. Inspect the frame for any damage or cracks. Repair any damage before proceeding.

3. Apply Glazing Tape

Apply a thin bead of glazing tape around the perimeter of the frame where the glass will sit. This tape creates a weathertight seal and helps prevent moisture from entering.

4. Position the New Glass

Carefully place the new glass into the frame on top of the glazing tape. Center the glass evenly.

5. Secure the Glass

Drive glazier's points into the frame around the perimeter of the glass about every 6 inches. Tap the points gently with a rubber mallet to secure them. Do not overtighten the points.

6. Apply Silicone Caulk

Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the outside edges of the glass where it meets the frame. This seal will prevent moisture from entering and strengthen the installation.

7. Clean Up

Wipe away any excess silicone caulk using a damp cloth. Allow the caulk to cure completely before operating the patio door.

Tips:

  • Choose glass that is the same thickness and type as the original.
  • Handle the glass carefully to avoid breaking it.
  • If you are not comfortable replacing the glass yourself, consult a professional.
  • Inspect the patio door regularly for any signs of damage or wear.
