How to Make Seat Covers for Patio Furniture
Protect your patio furniture from the elements and enhance its style with custom seat covers. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to make your own covers:
Materials
- Waterproof fabric (e.g., Sunbrella, marine canvas, outdoor polyester)
- Thread
- Measuring tape
- Chalk or fabric marker
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Optional: Cording or piping for trim
Measurements
Measure the width, depth, and height of your seat cushions, including any rounded corners or tufting. Add at least 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowance and ease of fitting.
Cutting the Fabric
Use your measurements to cut rectangular pieces of fabric for each seat cover. Ensure the fabric is cut to the following dimensions:
- Width = Width of cushion + 2 inches
- Depth = Depth of cushion + 2 inches
- Height = Height of cushion + 2 inches
Sewing the Covers
1. Place one piece of fabric right side up on a flat surface.
2. Fold one long edge over by 1 inch and press. Fold it over again by 1 inch and stitch it down to create a hem.
3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining three edges.
4. Place your seat cushion on top of the fabric and center it.
5. Fold the fabric up around the cushion, tucking the edges underneath and securing them with pins.
6. Sew around the edges of the fabric, close to the cushion, leaving an opening for stuffing (if desired).
7. Turn the cover right side out and stuff it to its desired fullness.
8. Hand-stitch the opening closed.
Optional: Adding Trim
For a decorative touch, you can add cording or piping around the edges of the covers. Simply attach the trim using a blind stitch or glue.

- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
