How to Install Pavers Over Concrete Patio

Transforming your concrete patio into an elegant and durable outdoor space with pavers is a rewarding home improvement project. By following these essential steps, you can create a stunning and long-lasting paver patio.

1. Prepare the Concrete Surface

Start by thoroughly cleaning the concrete patio using a pressure washer. Remove any dirt, debris, or oil that may hinder adhesion. Repair any cracks or uneven areas with a concrete patching compound.

2. Install Edging

Edging defines the perimeter of your paver patio and prevents them from shifting. Install concrete paver edging or plastic edging along the edges of the concrete. Secure the edging with stakes or concrete adhesive.

3. Apply Base Material

A gravel base provides a stable foundation for your pavers. Spread a 2-3 inch layer of crushed gravel evenly over the cleaned concrete surface. Compact the gravel using a plate compactor or hand tamper.

4. Install Leveling Sand

Fill the gaps between the gravel base and the pavers with a layer of leveling sand. The sand will help level the pavers and prevent them from settling unevenly. Install screed rails (long, straight boards) over the sand to create a level plane.

5. Lay Pavers

Begin laying pavers at one corner of the patio. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the pavers into place, ensuring they are level and evenly spaced. Work in small sections, moving screed rails as you progress.

6. Fill Joints

Apply polymeric sand into the joints between the pavers. Polymeric sand expands when wet, locking the pavers in place and preventing weeds from growing. Use a broom to work the sand into the joints.

7. Compact Pavers

Once the joints are filled, compact the pavers using a plate compactor. This process ensures they are firmly set in the base material and level with the surrounding area.

8. Seal Pavers (Optional)

Sealing pavers protects them from moisture, stains, and fading. Apply a sealant specifically designed for pavers. Allow the sealant to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Additional Tips:

  • Use a variety of paver sizes and colors to create a visually appealing design.
  • Create a slight slope to promote water drainage.
  • Clean your paver patio regularly to maintain its appearance.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on pavers.
By following these steps, you can successfully install pavers over a concrete patio and enjoy a beautiful and functional outdoor space for years to come.
