How To Install A Flagstone Patio Over Concrete

Installing a flagstone patio over existing concrete provides a beautiful and functional enhancement to your outdoor space. The process involves preparing the concrete surface, laying a bed of mortar, and setting the flagstones. This guide will outline the steps involved in creating a stunning flagstone patio over concrete.

Prepare the Concrete

A well-prepared concrete surface is crucial for a successful flagstone patio installation. Begin by cleaning the concrete thoroughly to remove dirt, debris, and any loose or flaking material. A pressure washer can be effective in removing stubborn grime. Once clean, inspect the concrete for any cracks or unevenness. Smaller cracks can be filled with a patching compound. For larger cracks or significant unevenness, consider grinding the concrete to a level surface.

After cleaning and leveling, prime the concrete surface with a bonding primer. This helps ensure proper adhesion between the mortar and the concrete. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Lay the Mortar Bed

A consistent mortar bed serves as the foundation for your flagstones. Typically, a mortar bed of 1-2 inches is sufficient but can vary depending on the size and thickness of the flagstones. Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring it has a workable consistency.

Using a trowel, spread a layer of mortar evenly over the prepared concrete surface. The mortar should be level and consistent, but slightly overfilled to account for the flagstone's thickness. Consider using a screed tool for larger areas to ensure the mortar bed is even. Allow the mortar to set for a short period, usually 10-15 minutes, before starting to lay the flagstones.

Install the Flagstones

Choose flagstones of varying shapes and sizes for a more natural and visually appealing patio. Begin by laying the largest flagstones first, working towards smaller stones. Arrange the flagstones on the mortar bed, ensuring a consistent gap between each stone. The width of this gap, typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch, will allow for drainage and prevent the flagstones from shifting. As you lay each flagstone, gently tap it into the mortar until level with the surrounding stones.

Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the stones into place. This will ensure the flagstones are properly seated in the mortar and create a level surface. Avoid using excessive force, as this can crack the flagstone. Once all flagstones are in place, use a jointing tool to create even gaps between the flagstones.

Grouting and Finishing

After the mortar has set for the recommended time, prepare the grout. Choose a grout color that complements the flagstones. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply it to the gaps between the flagstones. Use a grout float to spread the grout evenly and remove excess material. Allow the grout to dry completely, typically 24-48 hours. Once the grout is dry, clean the flagstones with a damp cloth to remove any grout residues. For a polished look, use a flagstone sealer to protect the surface from stains and weathering.

To prevent water pooling on the patio, set the flagstones with a slight slope, usually 1/4 inch per foot, towards the perimeter. This allows rainwater to drain properly. Regularly inspect and clean the flagstone patio to maintain its appearance and prevent damage over time.
