How to Install a Flagstone Patio Over Concrete

Transforming an existing concrete patio into a beautiful and inviting flagstone oasis is a project that can add charm and functionality to any outdoor space. By following these essential steps, you can create a durable and visually appealing flagstone patio that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Materials Needed:

  • Flagstones
  • Mortar mix
  • Gravel
  • Sand
  • Polymeric sand
  • Edging material

Step 1: Prepare the Concrete Surface

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the concrete surface with a pressure washer or strong detergent solution to remove any dirt, debris, or paint. Ensure that the concrete is level and free from cracks or holes. If there are any imperfections, repair them using a concrete patching compound.

Step 2: Create a Gravel Base

Spread a 4-inch layer of gravel over the prepared concrete surface. Compact the gravel firmly using a plate compactor or hand tamper. This layer will provide a stable base for the flagstones.

Step 3: Apply a Mortar Bed

Prepare a mortar mix according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spread a 1-inch thick layer of mortar over the gravel base. Flatten the mortar using a trowel, creating a smooth and level surface.

Step 4: Lay the Flagstones

Place the flagstones on the mortar bed, starting from one corner of the patio and working your way outwards. Press the flagstones into the mortar, ensuring that they are level and flush with each other. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap them into place.

Step 5: Fill the Joints

Once the flagstones are laid, fill the joints between them with polymeric sand. Polymeric sand is a fine-grained, moisture-resistant material that will prevent weeds from growing and lock the flagstones in place.

Step 6: Install Edging

Install edging material around the perimeter of the patio to secure the flagstones and create a clean finished look. You can choose from various materials such as metal, concrete, or plastic.

Tips:

  • Use different sizes and shapes of flagstones to create a more natural look.
  • Seal the flagstones to protect them from stains and wear.
  • Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before walking on the patio.
  • Sweep or blow away debris from the patio regularly to maintain its appearance.

With proper care and maintenance, your flagstone patio over concrete will provide years of enjoyment and enhance the outdoor living space of your home.
