How to Repair a Broken Cement Patio
A broken cement patio can be an eyesore and a safety hazard. If left unrepaired, cracks can widen and become tripping hazards, and the patio can eventually collapse. If you find yourself with a broken cement patio, don't despair. With the right tools and materials, you can repair it yourself and save yourself the cost of hiring a professional.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, you will need to gather the following materials:
- Cement mix
- Sand
- Gravel
- Water
- Bucket
- Trowel
- Edger
- Joints filler
Step 2: Prepare the Area
Once you have gathered your materials, you need to prepare the area around the broken cement. This involves removing any loose pieces of cement and cleaning the area thoroughly with a broom or hose.
Step 3: Dig Out the Broken Cement
Using a chisel and hammer, dig out the broken cement. Make sure to dig down to the level of the gravel base. Once you have removed all of the broken cement, use a trowel to smooth out the edges of the hole.
Step 4: Fill the Hole with Gravel
Fill the hole with gravel, compacting it as you go. The gravel will provide a solid base for the new cement.
Step 5: Mix the Cement
In a bucket, mix the cement mix with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. The cement should be thick enough to hold its shape but not too thick to pour easily.
Step 6: Pour the Cement
Pour the cement into the hole and use a trowel to smooth it out. Make sure that the cement is level with the surrounding patio.
Step 7: Edge the Cement
Use an edger to create a clean, finished edge around the new cement. This will help to prevent the cement from cracking.
Step 8: Apply Joint Filler
Once the cement has dried, apply joint filler to the joints between the new cement and the old patio. This will help to seal the joints and prevent water from seeping in.
Step 9: Cure the Cement
Allow the cement to cure for at least 24 hours before walking on it. During this time, keep the cement moist by covering it with a tarp or plastic sheeting.
With a little time and effort, you can repair a broken cement patio and restore it to its original condition.
