How to Change a Screen Patio Door
A screen patio door is a great way to let in fresh air and enjoy the outdoors without having to deal with insects or pests. However, over time, the screen can become damaged or worn, and it will need to be replaced. Replacing a screen patio door is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours.
Tools and Materials
- New screen
- Spline
- Spline tool
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Utility knife
Instructions
- Remove the old screen. Start by removing the spline that holds the screen in place. Use a utility knife to cut the spline along the edge of the frame. Then, carefully pull the old screen out of the frame.
- Measure the opening. Use a measuring tape to measure the width and height of the opening. Add 2 inches to both measurements to allow for overlap.
- Cut the new screen. Cut a piece of new screen to the size of the opening. Be sure to cut the screen slightly larger than the opening so that you have enough overlap to wrap around the frame.
- Install the new screen. Place the new screen over the opening and center it. Wrap the excess screen around the frame and insert the spline into the groove. Use a spline tool to tighten the spline and secure the screen in place.
- Trim the excess screen. Use a utility knife to trim any excess screen around the edges of the frame.
Tips
- When choosing a new screen, be sure to select one that is the same mesh size as the old screen.
- If you have a large screen door, you may want to ask a friend or family member to help you install the new screen.
- Be careful not to overtighten the spline when installing the new screen. This can damage the screen.
