How to Build a Patio Fire Pit

A patio fire pit is a great way to extend your outdoor living space and enjoy the outdoors even on cooler evenings. It's also a great place to gather with friends and family for roasting marshmallows or telling stories. Building a fire pit is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend.

Materials

Before you start, you'll need to gather the following materials:

  • Fire pit ring
  • Fire bricks
  • Gravel
  • Sand
  • Edging material (optional)

Tools

You'll also need the following tools:

  • Shovel
  • Trowel
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves

Location

The first step is to choose a location for your fire pit. It should be away from any trees or other flammable materials. It should also be in a well-ventilated area.

Digging the Hole

The next step is to dig a hole for the fire pit. The hole should be about 24 inches deep and 36 inches wide. The shape of the hole can be anything you like, but a circle is the most common.

Building the Fire Pit

Once you have dug the hole, you can start building the fire pit. Start by placing the fire pit ring in the center of the hole. Then, fill the area around the ring with fire bricks. Make sure that the bricks are level and that there are no gaps between them.

Adding the Gravel

Once the fire bricks are in place, you can add the gravel. The gravel will help to drain water away from the fire pit and prevent it from cracking. Fill the area around the fire pit with gravel, leaving about 2 inches of space at the top.

Adding the Sand

The final step is to add the sand. The sand will help to level the gravel and create a smooth surface for the fire. Fill the remaining space at the top of the fire pit with sand.

Finishing the Edging

If you want, you can finish the fire pit by adding an edging material around the edge. This will help to keep the gravel and sand in place.

Lighting Your Fire

Once your fire pit is complete, you can start a fire. Use dry firewood and start with a small fire. Gradually add more wood as the fire grows.

Enjoy Your Fire Pit

Your fire pit is now ready to enjoy. Gather around with friends and family, roast marshmallows, and tell stories.
