Build A Paver Patio Sand Base

Creating a solid foundation for your paver patio is crucial for its longevity and stability. A well-compacted sand base provides an even surface, prevents settling, and ensures proper drainage.

Materials Required:

  • Sand (compacted, coarse, or polymeric)
  • Plate compactor
  • Rake or level
  • String line or stakes
  • Measuring tape

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Base: Excavate the area to the desired depth, typically 6-8 inches. Remove any organic matter, debris, or tree roots.
  2. Install Drainage (Optional): If drainage is a concern, install a perforated pipe along the perimeter of the patio and backfill with gravel.
  3. Spread the Sand: Dump a 1-inch layer of sand over the prepared base and rake evenly. For compacted sand, use a plate compactor to firmly pack the sand.
  4. Level the Sand: Use a rake or level to create a smooth, level surface. Use a string line or stakes to ensure the base is level in all directions.
  5. Compact the Sand: Pass the plate compactor over the sand multiple times, working in overlapping passes. Repeat until the sand is firm and no longer compacts.
  6. Establish Slope (Optional): If water drainage is a concern, create a slight slope (1/4 inch per foot) away from your house or other structures.
