Replace Glass Patio Table Top With Tile: A Step-by-Step Guide

Transform the look of your outdoor space by replacing the glass top of your patio table with durable and stylish tile. With a few simple steps, you can create a unique and functional surface that will enhance your outdoor dining experience.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Tiles of your choice
  • Tile adhesive
  • Grout
  • Grout float
  • Tile spacers
  • Masking tape
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Step 1: Remove the Glass Top

Carefully remove the glass top from the table. Set it aside in a safe place or discard it.

Step 2: Prepare the Table Surface

Clean the table surface thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris. Use a degreaser if necessary to ensure proper adhesion.

Step 3: Apply Tile Adhesive

Spread a thin layer of tile adhesive onto the table surface using a notched trowel. Start at one end and work your way towards the other, keeping the adhesive layer even.

Step 4: Lay the Tiles

One at a time, carefully place the tiles onto the adhesive. Use tile spacers to ensure even spacing between the tiles.

Step 5: Grout the Tiles

Once the tiles are laid, mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a grout float to apply the grout between the tiles, pressing it firmly into the joints.

Step 6: Wipe Excess Grout

After waiting the recommended time, wipe away any excess grout from the surface of the tiles using a damp sponge. Use a circular motion to remove the grout without disturbing the joints.

Step 7: Seal the Tiles

Once the grout has completely dried, apply a tile sealer to protect the tiles from moisture and stains. Allow the sealer to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality tile adhesive designed for outdoor use.
  • Consider sealing the tiles before grouting to create a barrier against water and dirt.
  • If the tile surface is not perfectly flat, use a leveling system to ensure an even surface.
  • Allow ample time for the adhesive and grout to dry thoroughly before using the table.
