How to Fix a Screen on a Sliding Patio Door

Sliding patio doors are a great way to bring the outdoors in, but a damaged or torn screen can ruin the experience. Fortunately, fixing a screen on a sliding patio door is a relatively easy task that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the essential steps to follow:

1. Gather Your Materials

  • New screen material
  • Spline
  • Spline tool
  • Scissors
  • Utility knife
  • Measuring tape

2. Remove the Old Screen

Start by removing the old screen. Most screens are held in place by a spline, which is a thin, flexible strip that fits into a groove around the frame. To remove the spline, use a spline tool to pry it out of the groove. Once the spline is removed, the screen can be pulled out of the frame.

3. Cut the New Screen

Measure the opening of the sliding patio door and cut a piece of new screen material to fit. The screen material should be about 2 inches larger than the opening on all sides.

4. Install the New Screen

Place the new screen over the opening and center it. Starting at one corner, use a spline tool to insert the spline into the groove around the frame. Work your way around the frame, inserting the spline into the groove until it is completely secure. Trim any excess spline with a utility knife.

5. Reinstall the Screen

Once the new screen is installed, it can be reinstalled in the sliding patio door. Simply slide the screen into the frame until it is secure.

Tips:

  • When choosing new screen material, consider the mesh size. A smaller mesh size will keep out smaller insects, but it will also reduce airflow.
  • If you are not comfortable replacing the screen yourself, you can hire a professional to do it for you.
  • Regularly inspecting and maintaining your screen will help to extend its lifespan.
