How to Replace a Screen in a Sliding Patio Door
Replacing the screen in a sliding patio door is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a professional.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- New screen material
- Spline
- Spline roller
- Scissors
- Utility knife
- Measuring tape
Steps:
1. Remove the Old ScreenSlide the patio door open and locate the two screws that hold the screen frame in place. Remove the screws and carefully lift the screen frame out of the door.
2. Measure and Cut the New ScreenMeasure the opening of the screen frame and add 2 inches to each side to allow for overlap. Cut the new screen material to the measured size.
3. Insert the Screen into the FramePlace the new screen material over the screen frame and smooth out any wrinkles. Fold the excess material over the edges of the frame and secure it with the spline.
4. Roll the Spline In PlaceUsing the spline roller, roll the spline into the groove around the perimeter of the screen frame. The spline should be tight enough to hold the screen securely, but not so tight that it tears the material.
5. Trim the Excess SplineOnce the spline is in place, use a utility knife to trim any excess material. Be careful not to cut the screen material.
6. Reinstall the Screen FrameLift the screen frame back into the door and secure it with the screws. Slide the patio door closed to check that the screen is installed correctly.
Tips:
- Use a spline that is the same size as the old spline.
- If the screen material is too loose, it will tear easily.
- If the screen material is too tight, it will be difficult to roll in the spline.
- Be careful not to cut yourself with the utility knife.
