How to Install Pavers on an Existing Concrete Patio

Transforming an existing concrete patio into a stylish and durable paver surface is a DIY project within reach for many homeowners. By following these essential steps, you can achieve a professional-looking result that will enhance the outdoor living space of your home.

Preparation

Before starting the installation, it's crucial to prepare the existing concrete patio. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the surface with a pressure washer or a solution of bleach and water to remove any dirt, debris, or mold. Once the concrete is clean, inspect it for cracks or uneven areas that may need to be repaired. If necessary, fill in any cracks or level out any uneven spots using a concrete patch or leveling compound.

Paver Selection

Choosing the right pavers is key to the overall aesthetic and durability of your new patio. Consider the size, shape, color, and material of the pavers that will complement your home's exterior and personal style. It's recommended to select pavers with a thickness of at least 2 inches to ensure longevity under outdoor conditions.

Layout and Dry Fit

Start by creating a layout of your desired paver design. This can be done by marking the perimeter and snapping chalk lines to indicate where the pavers will go. Once the layout is complete, place the pavers in position without using any adhesive or mortar to get a visual representation of the final result. Make adjustments to the layout as needed to achieve the best fit and aesthetic.

Base Layer

To ensure a stable base for the pavers, create a layer of compacted sand over the concrete patio. The sand layer should be approximately 1-2 inches deep. Use a plate compactor or hand tamper to compact the sand, creating a firm and level base for the pavers.

Installing the Pavers

Starting from one corner, carefully place the pavers onto the compacted sand base. Use a rubber mallet or paver tamper to gently tap the pavers into place, ensuring they are level and even. Work your way across the patio, maintaining a consistent spacing between the pavers. If necessary, you can use paver spacers to achieve uniform spacing.

Filling Joints

Once the pavers are installed, fill the joints between them with polymeric sand. Polymeric sand is a special type of sand that, when combined with water, hardens and creates a durable bond between the pavers. Apply the polymeric sand to the joints and use a broom or squeegee to work it into the gaps. Remove any excess sand from the surface of the pavers.

Edging

To define the perimeter of your new paver patio and prevent the pavers from shifting, install edging around the perimeter. Paver edging is available in various materials, including concrete, metal, or plastic. Choose an edging that complements your paver design and secure it using spikes or adhesive.

Sealing (Optional)

For added protection and enhanced longevity, consider sealing the paver surface. Paver sealers are available in various types and finishes, so choose one that is suitable for your specific pavers and desired look. Apply the sealer according to the manufacturer's instructions to protect your new patio from stains, fading, and wear.
